English Salon- for English Learners in San Francisco The YWCA hosted 4 English Salons in 2011; all of them were huge successes. Over 30 participants and 6 volunteers attended each event. Each salon had free talk time, songs, games, prizes and refreshments. There were two game stations that consisted of “Body Bingo” and “Verbs and Ladders”. In “Body Bingo”, volunteers pointed to body parts and the students had to find the corresponding word on their bingo sheet. The first one with 5 body parts correctly identified in a row won. In the “Verbs and Ladders” game, students rolled the dice and advanced forward to the appropriate square. Each square had a verb that the students had to change to the past tense and then make a sentence. The first one to get to the final square, by making correct sentences, won. Jennifer Collins volunteer, played piano and sang songs including Yesterday, Home on the Range, and Old Stewball. The students would get “YWCA Bucks” for participating, and more for winning, which they could take to the ”Dollar Store” and bargain in English for fun knickknacks such as pencils, glasses cases, notebooks, Tupperware, and kitchen products.

Students, some of whom brought family members and friends, had a wonderful time during the activities that allowed them to practice English grammar and vocabulary. At the party’s end, a raffle featured several prizes, including USB drives and gift cards, donated by the San Francisco Public Library and the YWCA. The volunteers found it quite fulfilling to connect with people from different cultures and help people acquire new English skills. Thanks to funding from the YWCA, everyone enjoyed a variety of beverages and dim sum throughout the evening. A special thanks to everyone that made these events possible!
